IZMIR CESME GUIDE

Izmir Cesme Guide
Cesme wasn’t of any significance during the ancient times, although the region and its thermal springs are acknowledged by historians of that time. The Romans had a settlement in the area which in turn became part of the Byzantine Empire until the 11th century when Seljuk Turks took over. For the next 400 years various warrior Turks ruled Cesme. By the 14th century, mainly due to the fact that it was the end of the famous Silk Road where goods were carried to and from Asia, Cesme became a major port in western Turkey and the Turks allowed the Republic of Genoa to build a trading post and a fortress. In the 15th century, the Ottoman Turks ruled the area and Cesme eventually became part of the modern Turkish Republic.
